Maker Space

So far, I think the maker space has been a success.  Students seem extremely engaged and the speed of their understanding of the building process has been fantastic.  I don't quite know exactly what I was expecting, but it wasn't anything of this caliber.

I hope you guys are enjoying the work that we are doing in this school.  I know that some days can drag on, but please realize that there is a reason we do everything the way that we do.  It will all make sense when you design and build something meaningful.

The blogs seem to be working, though some of the tech limitations have been overwhelming.  Lord knows I'm tired of bypassing the security measures.  I'm proud of the progress that my students have made in such a short amount of time.  By the end of the school year, we will truly have a smooth-running, paper-free English classroom.

No homework for the weekend, except for keeping your blog updated.  Feel free to add some of your classmates and interact with each other.

Have a great Labor Day weekend.

Gill - Introduction

Greetings, all.  My name is Jeremy Gill and I teach 9th and 10th grade English at Design Lab Early College High School in Cleveland, OH.  Originally from the mountains of West Virginia, I have been living in Ohio for 3 years now.  I graduated from West Virginia University in 2009 with a B.A. in English Literature/Creative Writing, followed by an M.A. in Secondary English Education in 2013.

In my spare time, I enjoy video games, football, and messing around with computers.  If I wasn't teaching, I would be working with computers in some capacity.  Or maybe I would be playing for the Oakland Raiders.  Who knows?

My primary focus this year is to create polished, professional writers out of my students.  No more text speak and no more grammatical errors.  By the end of this class, my students WILL be able to write a professional essay, acceptable by traditional high school standards.

Also, we're going to read.  Constantly.  Prepare.

Self-Introduction for Students

These blogs are going to be more than just a simple class writing tool.  They will be published for the entire world to see.  People you will never meet will view these blogs and gain valuable insight and knowledge of you, your experiences, and your character.

For your first post, introduce yourself.  Tell us about where you're from, your family history, your background, your hopes, your dreams, your goals, your favorite things (movies, tv, etc.), what matters most to you, etc.  Be creative.  Be expressive.  Make sure we get to know the real YOU.
